JEFFERSON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY: JCPL Tips on Buying the Right E-Reader or Tablet for Your Lifestyle

Announcement

Jefferson County Public Library issued the following announcement on Dec. 14.

Finding a new device that fits your lifestyle and lets you download free Library content is a frequent question heard at Jefferson County Public Library.

If you’re thinking about replacing an older tablet or e-reader, or if you’re buying one as a gift, here are some tips with a focus on using JCPL’s downloadable and streaming services, opens a new window.

Our handy library compatibility matrix, opens a new window details all of JCPL’s vendors and content and shows which devices work on each. One of the most versatile options is to purchase a tablet that supports both applications and internet use. With a Kindle Fire, Android or Apple product, you can access e-books, audiobooks, stream movies and music, and read digital magazines, all on one device. PC Magazine, opens a new window discusses their top picks for tablets based on different user circumstances.

If a tablet isn’t what you’re after, perhaps you’d like a dedicated e-reader. E-readers are perfect for distraction-free, lightweight reading on-the-go. We recommend considering a product like a Kobo, Nook Glow Light, or Kindle Paperwhite (note that a Kindle Paperwhite will only support e-books from one of JCPL’s vendors: OverDrive and Overdrive’s Libby). To weigh the pros and cons, we’ve gathered some articles from around the web to help you consider your options—PC Magazine, opens a new window and CNet, opens a new window both have current reviews of popular e-reader options.

Another great resource is Consumer Reports, opens a new window, which is free with your library card. Check out unbiased product reviews and ratings, as well as recommendations and buying advice for thousands of products and services.
