Buck calls for VA to reverse closures

Buck

Akron News Reporter recently issued the following announcement.

U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, R-Windsor, has criticized a decision by the Asset and Infrastructure Review Commission to close Community-Based Outpatient Clinics and other Outpatient Services Sites in Eastern Colorado.

The Commission announced a plan to close locations in Burlington, La Junta and Lamar.

“The La Junta, Lamar, and Burlington facilities are the foundation for [Veterans Affairs] infrastructure in Eastern Colorado and help ensure that veterans can access the health care and services they have earned,” Buck said.

La Junta was one of 800 Community-Based Outpatient Clinics nationwide, implemented to create easier access to health care, according to information on the American Legion’s website. They provide common outpatient services, including health and wellness visits without requiring a visit to larger medical centers.

Many veterans seeking medical care in Eastern Colorado already travel to Cheyenne for doctor’s appointments, and many of those veterans rely upon transportation from Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion volunteers. Including travel and wait time, the medical appointment in many cases can last all day.

“It is of the upmost importance that we honor our commitment to our veterans, and we can do that by ensuring the VA does not move forward with any closures that would jeopardize their access to quality health care and services in the community,” Buck said.
