MW Tennis Players of the Week - March 22

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico sophomore Arda Azkara has been tabbed the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. On the women’s side, San Diego State’s Andjela Skrobonja is named MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Freshman of the Week honors go to Fresno State’s Mariya Vyshkina. No selection was made for Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week.

MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ARDA AZKARA, NEW MEXICO

Sophomore, Izmet, Turkey

  • Recorded a combined 2-2 week in singles and doubles, taking down No. 74 Drake, 7-0, and Radford, 4-3.
  • Against Radford, battled to win 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, leading the Lobos to comeback from 3-2 deficit before clinching the win.
  • In the No. 1 singles position, defeated Radford’s Demis Taramonlis, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
  • Against Drake’s Jeremy Schifris, won in the No. 1 singles flight 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
  • Teamed with Alex Maggs to face Drake’s Oliver Johansson/Matija Matic, unfinished at 6-2.
WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ANDJELA SKROBONJA, SAN DIEGO STATE

Junior, Sombor, Serbia/ Kosta Cukic

  • Helped the Aztecs defeat No. 37 Purdue, winning both singles and doubles matches.
  • Won the No. 1 singles flight, beating Purdue’s Liz Norman, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
  • With partner Andreea Velcea, won the doubles No. 2 slot defeating Carmen Gallardo/Tara Katarina Milic, 6-4.
WOMEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

MARIYA VYSHKINA, FRESNO STATE

Kharkiv, Ukraine

  • Went 1-1 during the week while helping Fresno State to a 4-3 win over then-No. 54 BYU, providing the match-clinching point in a three-set rally.
  • In the No. 6 singles position took down BYU’s Kara Wheatley, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
